What do you do when you get sick? You go to the doctor to get checked out. That is what we have all been taught to do. The thing about this idea is, that here in the west, our medical system is mainly focused on managing and treating symptoms of diseases, rather than on restoring the whole person and healing the root cause of the dis-ease.

When you split the word "dis-ease," it means there is disharmony within you. A situation of unease, where the body is not at ease, which means it is not functioning properly. A body in a state of dis-ease is well on its way to developing a disease, which is the end result of dis-ease. At the root of all diseases, illnesses, or ailments, there's an emotional and spiritual component (or a metaphysical aspect) to it that, if looked at and considered, can aid in the healing process.

Our illnesses, aches, and pains are part of the challenges we face in life. We must learn to cope with them and find ways to make them easier to bear. In our culture, the most common belief is that when we become sick or ill, it happens by chance, as if we have nothing to do with it at all. As if we have no control and are victims of the disease. When you look at the metaphysical component, it suggests that we play a part in our own health problems and that if we take care of ourselves holistically, we should be able to not only aid in the healing process but also not contribute to creating more disease in the future. This is not to say that we’re entirely to blame for the physical symptoms we develop, but, it is to say that we aren’t completely powerless to them.

The idea is to be in connection with your body, to be in communication with it.  It talks to us.  Our physical symptoms are just part of the natural communication process between our body and spirit. There is a deep connection between our past hurts and traumas and our current reality. When we heal those old wounds, we can feel a sense of wholeness.

Take a disease like cancer for example, according to the article Background to Cancer in General by Dr. Michelle Strydom, MD she has found that bitterness, of some form or another, is the primary spiritual root that causes, or accelerates, internal toxicity within cells. This includes long-term, lingering, festering bitterness against others, against yourself, and even against God. As a general rule of thumb: if a cancerous growth is benign, it is bitterness against yourself. If the growth is malignant, it is bitterness against others. In her article, The Spiritual Reason Behind Breast Cancer, Dr.Michelle Strydom MD explains that when it comes to breast cancer, the bitterness, resentment, and/or strife is between the woman with the disease and another female in her life.

This article is designed to create awareness of the connection between the mind, body, and spirit so we no longer look at health one-dimensionally (physically); and to use this awareness to deal with the issues behind the dis-ease.  Regardless of the disease, stress is at the root of everything. Stress is a common cause of disease. It provides the perfect environment for bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens to grow. This is because disease requires the presence of an environment (body) in a constant state of stress, ie oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body, causing your immune system to weaken, and leaving you with little or no defense against infection and disease, e.g., cancer.

This is a quote from Discovery Health dated August 21, 2000: “The stress hormone is linked to earlier death in women with breast cancer. Abnormal fluctuations in the stress hormone cortisol are linked to a decreased survival time with advanced breast cancer.”

Do you think that the internal conflict caused by holding onto bitterness would put a person in a constant state of stress? Most definitely. Bottom line is, when a person has a strong, healthy immune system, disease just does not happen.

So go to the doctor, get checked out, and definitely take advantage of the many advances we’ve made in health.  But also take the opportunity to deal with the issues that are stressing you out and get stress, fear, and anxiety out of your mental and emotional life, so that stress hormones such as cortisol will no longer be produced. In other words, take time to reflect upon your life and make peace with yourself, with others, and with God, when you do, you will have a healthier immune system.

Blessings,
