For anyone that has seen the movie Bio-dome, it has become a reality. Scientists have 6 people locked in an isolation dome for one-year in order to simulate conditions of the small living spaces that will be seen as the first group goes on their one way trip to Mars in 2024. The 6 participants of this study include a German Physicist, a French Astrobiologist, and 4 Americans, a Pilot, an Architect, a Doctor/Journalist, and a Soil Scientist. While in the dome, which is 20 ft. tall and 36 ft. wide, each individual will have a small room with a cot and desk in order to work. For the entire year, the crew will be eating food such as canned tuna and powdered cheese, and will only be allowed outside in a space suit. The desolate location of the dome on the northern slope of Mauna Loa does not offer animal or plant life as well as no access to fresh water.
