Do we deserve the sacrifice?

Former Navy Seal, NRA News contributor, and founder of Dynamis Alliance Dom Raso recently shared his thoughts on our nation while answering the question “Do we deserve the WWII generations sacrifice?” From NRA News:

Episode transcript:

I haven’t always embraced history. But when I walked through a World War II museum the other day, it changed my life forever.

I saw the dead bodies of Americans piled up on Omaha Beach, jackets filled with bullet holes and the sand stained with blood. Four hundred nineteen thousand four hundred American soldiers gave their lives to win World War II.

That’s 419,400 men willing to charge at a hail of gun fire knowing damn well they would die … willing to give their lives for as little as an inch of forward progress for the men behind them, the country behind them and the idea behind them.

WHATSNEW

One life for an inch—for freedom.

As I walked through that museum, I couldn’t help but wonder what those men would think about us today. I even found myself asking a question that should send shivers of guilt down all of our spines: Did they fight too hard for freedom? Did they sacrifice too much? Did they make life in America so safe, so easy, so completely removed from difficulty and hardship, that we lost our understanding that freedom is guaranteed to no one and can be lost in an instant?

  1. I enjoyed your article Josh. I am huge history buff. I was stationed in Berlin while the wall was still up and had the honor to serve at several post there that were results of WWII. Being able to see some of that History myself really left me with profound respect and awe for our greatest generation.
I thought about your question and I believe that those veterans would say ‘they did what they had to do’. I have read enough books and studied enough of history around that era and that statement always seems to be their response.
In a more jovial thought of what they would say about most civilians in our current era is ‘they have it too easy’.
I believe most Military folks and especially us combat arms veterans and active duty would basically respond the same way.
I had to think a lot about the main question, “Do we deserve the Sacrifice they made?”. I don’t think that will ever be an easy question to answer. I believe however if we lose the freedoms that our founding fathers laid out for us then the answer is an easy NO. That being said we veterans and active duty military have to continue to remind and teach folks of how they currently have those freedoms by the sacrifices made by all our military and that those that gave the ultimate sacrifice paid for it with their lives.
