Top 5 Army Movies

#5 Stripes
Hard-luck cabbie John Winger (Bill Murray) — directionless after being fired from his job and dumped by his girlfriend — enlists in the U.S. Army with his close pal, Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis). After his barely satisfactory performance in basic training, the irreverent Winger emerges as the figurehead for a ragtag band of Army misfits. However, his hijinks threaten to cause an international scandal when he inadvertently commandeers a military assault vehicle behind enemy lines.
#4 We Were Soldiers
Based upon the best-selling book “We Were Soldiers Once … and Young” by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore (Ret.) and journalist Joseph L. Galloway, this compelling war drama depicts the true story of the first major battle between the United States and North Vietnamese forces. It is a film about uncommon valor and nobility under fire, loyalty among soldiers, and the heroism and sacrifice of men and women both home and abroad.
#3 Saving Private Ryan
Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) takes his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Surrounded by the brutal realties of war, while searching for Ryan, each man embarks upon a personal journey and discovers their own strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.
#2 The Hurt Locker
Staff Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner), Sgt. J.T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) are members of a bomb-disposal unit in Baghdad. As their tour of duty enters its final weeks, the men face a set of increasingly hazardous situations, any of which could end their lives in an explosive instant.
Alright, we were only joking with this one.
#2* (the real one) Black Hawk Down
#1 Apocalypse Now
In Vietnam in 1970, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) takes a perilous and increasingly hallucinatory journey upriver to find and terminate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-promising officer who has reportedly gone completely mad. In the company of a Navy patrol boat filled with street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer (Robert Duvall), and a crazed freelance photographer (Dennis Hopper), Willard travels further and further into the heart of darkness.

In the case of Stripes. Funny and Comedic. However, I personally do not like to see Soldiers being depicted as buffoons and con artist manipulators. The scene of soldiers willingly surrendering their M16s even though surrounded to me is very troubling. Maybe just being nit-picky? I did not think Stripes was all that great.
We were Soldiers: Good I found it troubling to see the Army so unprepared for the casulty notification scenes. That scene infuriated me. Why did they have to cast Julia Roberts? A known ultra Liberal. Yuck! Granted she has “Purty Lips”. Which are worth big $ though.
Apocalypse Now: I hate Potheads! But the Air Cav scene was the best.
I would have selected Patton, Gettysburg , Glory and a WW I theme movie which I cannot remember the name of.
Julia Roberts was not in we were soldiers…. fact check dude
Brum, Sorry. My error. You are correct. Julia Roberts was not in We Were Soldiers. The actress Madeline Stowe or whoever it was looked like Julia Roberts. At least to me anyways.
The Hurt Locker, really? I would have preferred to see Platoon in place of The Hurt Locker. The EOD guys I know would never run off post by themselves at night, they would never do half the crap SSG James did in that movie.
It was a decent movie, once you get past the inaccuracies, but not in the top 5 Army movies in my opinion.
Christopher, I only included The Hurt Locker as a joke. I am with you on the idea that EOD guys would not do that. As far as Platoon, that would be in my personal top 10, however with the number and quality of some of the Army films out there, it is a tough choice.
I’m glad Black Hawk Down made it in there.., it’s the only war movie i can think of (oh wait, Saving Private Ryan is another one) that is actually not dramatized to be more shocking than the actual event, it’s toned down even.
Thanks Joshua.
I’m more of a Deer Hunter fan than Apocalypse Now. Full Metal Jacket is on my top 5 too.
Full Metal Jacket is a Marine movie. This post is about Army movies.
1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Full Metal Jacket
3. Platoon
4. We Were Soldiers
5. Blackhawk Down
Band of Brothers is CLEARLY the best depiction to come out of hollywood but its a TV show so I assume that is the reason for exclusion.
Sorry chris, full metal jacket was much a marine movie. But, one of my all time favorites on all levels is A Bridge Too Far. Even though it depicts a military blunder in WWII. I would also include Fury.
Almost lost it on #2. Good joke bro.
You need to check out a movie called “Johnny got his gun” it’s a WW1 movie, it’s the movie that MetallicA’s One is based on (both song and video) that’s in my top 5!
No band of brothers? No Saving Pvt.Ryan? No FURY? Yet you list Stripes? You need to drop and beat your face!
The Siege of Firebase Gloria. It’s an Army and Marine movie, with the Air Cav thrown in for good measure. And no Patton? Really? You got movies about people getting their feelings hurt but not THE classic Army movie? How bout Boys in Company C? The Longest Day? Why not throw in Private Benjamin and In the Army Now, as long as you’re gonna wear white socks in your boots.
No Platoon? No Deer Hunter? Your list is ridiculous. I would say Band of Brothers, but that was a miniseries.
