F-4 Crash Test is Hard to Watch [VIDEO]
For those of you who don’t know, the F-4 is a two seated twin engine fighter jet, first entering service with the U.S. Navy. It would later be used by the USAF and USMC, and had multiple capabilities, including a top speed of more than Mach 2.2 and the ability to carry 18,000 pounds of weaponry. In short, another badass U.S. fighter jet.
Now on to the destruction.
At a time when nuclear power plants were a feasible target, the government wanted to see what would happen if a fully functional F-4 crashed into a nuclear plant. From World War Wings:
Unfortunately, a sacrificial lamb was needed. At the time F-4s were plentiful, so one was snatched up for the test. Put on a rocket propelled track, it was accelerated to 500 mph.
At the end of the track was a 470 ton, 23×12 ft. concrete block. It weighed approximately 25 times more than the plane.
