Professor States That Marine Corps Is Toxic

Categories: Military, News

Professor James Joyner…from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College apparently doesn’t like Marines. Despite his posting, he believes that we are so masculine that we’ve become toxic. While Dr. Joyner’s résumé is impressive, to say the least, the man is a combat veteran from Desert Storm and was awarded the Bronze Star. However…there is one thing missing from Dr. Joyner’s résumé.

He isn’t a Marine.

He is a soldier and from the looks of it, a damn good one. Hell, he graduated from both Airborne and Air Assault schools, earned his Ph.D. and has one hell of a career. As far as veterans being successful after their time in service goes, well done. Well done indeed!

When it comes to the Marine Corps being upset about combat roles being opened up to women…well we weren’t so much upset as we were going by the data. The data provided by none other than now retired Sergeant Major Justin LeHew and his excellent staff at Marine Corps Training and Education Command. Many pop shots were taken at Sgt. Maj. LeHew and his staff, accusing them of sandbagging the testing to skew the results. Sgt. Maj. LeHew didn’t take that shit sitting down, as one could expect from “The Hero of Nasiriyah” and ferociously defended the testing and the Marines involved.

Professor Joyner, while you certainly hold all the accolades and prestigious titles and relevant combat experience, you don’t have the title of Marine. Therefore, in the words of many an officer and staff noncommissioned officers, it would behoove you to not talk about that which you have not earned and that is the title of Marine.

In the Marine Corps, we care about one thing and one thing only. Winning battles. That’s why the Marine Corps exists. This last part sounds grossly motivated like a recruiting commercial, but we don’t care. Marines care about winning and if what you bring to the table doesn’t enhance our chances of winning, male or female, you can kick rocks and hit the road. You can especially kick rocks and hit the road if you’re not a Marine and feel compelled to offer half-assed commentary on our culture.

For someone with as prestigious a posting, surrounded by Marines, you ought to know better, you don’t rate.

Know what we're sayin fam?

  1. Our marines should be as “toxic” as possible. There is a term called “Battlefield Terror”. It comes when our enemies breakdown when news comes that the Marines have stepped on to the battlefield. “And hell is coming and the U.S. Marine Corp is coming with it.” I am an admire the Corp and did not serve. Our family produced engineered weapons for them. We worked closely with the services. I am now retired and have fond memories with this association.

    1. My son served during the first Gulf War. His unit was back and forth over the Iraq border before the actual fighting started. One day they had started to set up for the night, digging fighting holes, setting up communication equipment etc. they came under attack by Iraq’s Republican Guard and were badly outnumbered. The skirmish lasted for awhile and suddenly the Iraqi’s started dropping their weapons and waving white flags. By the time they got an interpreter there to figure out why, the Iraqi’s told them when they realized they were fighting Marines they knew they had to give up. Apparently they had been told to become s Marine you must kill your mother or your father. Marines were too badass for even Iraq’s best fighting force….

  2. For all his accomplishments, he hasn’t got the nuggets to admit the truth. The Marines scare him! And they should. They are killers and he is not a killer. Sheep are always afraid of Lions with good reason…

      1. Bobby, one needs to know what’s on the Bronze Star citation. It is often for excellence of job performance in a combat zone. Not to disparage it, but it can be awarded for actions not under fire.

      2. There was a female MSgt in the Air Force who got a Bronze Star in Afghanistan for making sure all the pay was correct for everyone. I would like to read the citation. Just saying

      3. Stfu Bob you’re clearly a retarded civilian and probably a boomer.
Joyner is a fucking POG who was only in the Army as an Artillery officer for 4 years and probably never left Kuwait. He doesn’t even have a Combat Action Badge, so he never saw action so he is far from a “Killer” His Bronze Star is for some dumb PoG shit since he was never in combat.
        >combat veteran my ass

  3. Do you need more Crayons 🖍? 😉 I agree with you. You don’t know what I did in the Army and you do not have a need to know. My nephew was a Marine. My dad was Air Force, which is why I chose different. I used to want to be. SEAL but sanity comes with age. I’m proud of my service as should anyone who serves. Bu I agree, saying the Marines is too masculine is not the place of a non-Marine IMO.

  4. I too am a former doggie, air assault grad, disabled veteran. I don’t have a PhD but I do have a DD-214 and a bachelors degree (Sum Cum Laude) and I’d have a Marine at my front, back or side cause I know they will get the job done no matter what. That ain’t ‘toxic’. It’s a culture of winning and that is what it takes to keep our country free!

  5. People who have not earned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor need to shut the hell up! Marines handle things in house. Marines do not make their business everyone else’s business.

  6. Well. When something absolutely, positively has to be destroyed overnight. You have to use something TOXIC. Personally. I think I like be called TOXIC. LOL

    1. Yes. We imbrace the word toxic as Marines! The difficult thing, as you can tell, is finding a way to make the rest of America understand that mentality and lifestyle.

      For example,
Identifying where females can assist in war is important and history has shown us that during WWI and WWII American society at large stood behind the war efforts. I often question whether or not Americans would back troops as much today if a total war effort were needed (no, I’m not talking about what is going on in Iraq, Syria, or Afghanistan but more of a full scale conventional war).

Food for thought, but women went to work in factories if the men left. I’m sure I’ll be called a sexist but you can see how times have changed to the point where if you suggested that women should remain behind and help at home then your shunned in certain circles these days.

Just like that idea, technologies have evolved but war remains war at its Corps (pun intended), to remain destructive or just call it toxic. Marines know this and keep running towards the sound of the gunfire.

  7. Agree 100% spent 5years in the Corps and 15+ years in the Army Reserves OIF 08-09 OEF 10-11 through all my service I always considered myself a Marine

    1. Marines, Soldiers, whatever, we need as much toxicity as we can get in our military. I will say one thing, marines think way to highly of themselves, from one grunt soldier’s opinion who had first hand experience with teaching them that lesson in a hard way. Toxicity is good in the military but don’t be too arrogant

      0
      1. There is a difference in units even in the Corps. One thing that makes grunts different is they will never give up. You have to severely maim or kill a Marine before he’ll stop. Try to teach this 0352 the hard way.

  8. Fuck that dude and his pussified mentality clearly doesn’t know what toxicity is lmao my brothers a marine and I’m sure he’d tell everyone he knows when it comes to being toxic I as an army soldier am up there with nightshade and cyanide so dude can gurgle a dick and tongue bathe some balls

  9. Well, no fucking shit, Sherlock.

Obviously, this asshole has never served a day in the military.

He can just sit the fuck down, and shut the fuck up.

      1. Naw that MF needs to check again. Maybe he identifies as a woman. After saying some of the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. Fu*k him.

  10. Omg, the 100hr war….. come on?? I’ve been shot at more as a civilian. So you have to “throw like a girl” to be accepted in society now a day? The Marines are a killing force. That’s all we are meant to do, get over it. I don’t care how impressed you are with yourself. USMC Ret.

  11. There are reasons why Marines are different. There are reasons why other non Marines just like to mention us in whatever they happen to have said. It doesn’t take much resources at all for Marines to get any job completely done. Piss of the Marines and see just how TOXIC WE will become, then total destruction follows with no apologies.

    0
  12. I agree with you, except on one issue. You don’t have to be a Marine to understand that the focus is lethality and that men bring more lethality to the battlefield than women. True, the exceptional and extraordinary woman may be equal to the average marine grunt, but that shouldn’t open the door for all women. The good professor may have badges and a award from a 100 hour war, but his words betray his lack of understand of combat arms, particularly the Infanty, and without a doubt the Marines. So, it’s not about his branch of service, it’s about his PC myopia. RLTW NSDQ

  13. He can kiss our ass. Bronze star without a combat V, doesn’t mean shit, they handed those out like candy at Halloween to the officers in 2003.

    1. I am former army, my brother was a marine and one of my best friends in a gunny now. we are all toxic…I think its because of MREs. Sounds like a typical professor though. Most likely on board with being ok with young boys “identifying” as girls etc. worlds going to sh*t.

      1. My fav was beef party in ramen noodles… mix in the cheese, then the crackers, then hot sauce in that little bottle, stir it all up – f’kin delicious

  14. Last I checked out foes were doing the deed with chai boys, animals, and anything that didn’t have a twig and berries between their legs were beat, had acid thrown in their face, or killed. They kill their own indiscriminately, and somehow we’re the assholes? Fight fire with fire.

  15. Thank God for real men who stand up for God and County and leave their blood and sweat and often their lives in a foreign country protecting our right to live in peace and believe the stupidest things in the world. Father of a Marine 0351 with 2 combat tours and Juris Doctorate and a beautiful bride and a baby on the way… This is not toxic this is freaking awesome! This is AMERICAN…

  16. I love it!
I am married to a Marine, friends with a great many Marines, and an associate member of the Emerald Empire Detachment #917 of the Marine Corps League. I have the honor of being the Detachment’s chaplain. We all know what it takes to make a Marine, and I honor you all for it. You keep right on terrifying the bad guys!

  17. This coulda been written better because you have all the valid points. But Ed Berry nailed it. There’s a reason we have marines because they fucking step up to the plate that no one else will. We need fuckers like these people. Fuck James Joyner’s opinion on the matter.

    0
  18. Hey Joyner, shut your Pie hole I know your a vet but enough is enough. What’s your problem ? Sounds like maybe someone has penal envy! ! ! SEMPER FIDELIS AND ESPRIT DE CORPS ALWAYS AND FOREVER ! ! !

  19. Another sign the world is going to shit !!!!!
Somebody give him his participation trophy pat him on the ass an tell him to shut the hell up !!!!!!

  20. Opinions are like assholes, and often assholes give opinions. That aside, this is a poorly written article. There is no reference information, data, quotes or context around the “toxic statement.” (Assume clickbait?) Bottom line, whether you agree/disagree about the toxicity of Marine Corps culture, the overwhelming, undeniable fact is that the Marine Corps doesn’t give 1 single, solitary shit about opinions, nor should it. Agree that winning wars is what the Marine Corps is for, all the rest is non-essential drivel. This soldier’s opinion is that we should all respect and honor our devil dog brothers and sisters and our country is a better place with the Marine Corps as is; it is doubtful that I’m alone in that opinion. Now…Go Army!

  21. I’m just tired of outside is having an opinion facts are wars and nice wars on going anywhere and people just need to stop sugarcoating politicking

  22. I come from a military family. Sadly I was denied the privilege and honor of serving in the armed forces (I am deaf). My father was a Green Beret in Vietnam, my Uncle a Marine (military police) my older brother a Marine (13th MEU before retiring from the 101st Airborne), my younger brother was Army Artillery (their flag says Crusaders) and the list goes on in my family. Knowing that my brother and Uncle served as Devil Dogs and that they endured “the suck”, makes me proud. They are and were not toxic. Anyone that impedes their defense of our great nation and attempts to shine a bad light on them, are themselves, toxic. Toxic people are what’s wrong in this day and age. I would suggest the so called “professor” drop what he knows and educate himself on honor, integrity and duty. His “qualifications mean nothing without practical knowledge of what the Marine Corps is really about. To all you men and women that served our country, I salute you. Thank you for your service. If there’s one thing I would love to be able to hear, even just once, it’s the roar of the Corps when they’re singing cadence. Semper Fi.

  23. They hate us because they ain’t us. The Army does not have the brother hood the Marine corps does “Esprit De Corps”….pride. you go into the Army but you join the Marine Corps. Its a mind set of being the best and proud of it, you earned your spot among the thousands before you. Even when your time in service is done, it is not once a Marine all ways a Marine. The Army has many good units and many good men and woman, but at the end of the day there not Marines.

  24. Just virtue signalling. The strain of person that knows he’s wrong but parrots the political line anyway. It’s like the strain of service member that will say “18 year olds aren’t mature enough to buy an AR!” and then turn around and be fine with 18 years handed machine guns, explosives, etc, and be required to make life and death decisions. It’s one or the other, not both, and obviously there were thousands and thousands of 18 year olds that were mature enough for those responsibilities.

  25. I equate this guy with the Fort Hood shooter, the West Point grad with his anti American t-shirt, the Navy sailor who posted a video of herself deciding not to honor the flag, and all the other clowns who somehow fly under the radar. The military is not a social justice experiment.

    0
  26. Well said. Double standards kill people. Legislation doesn’t increase a woman’s mettle for combat readiness.

  27. Professor Joyner needs to go find herself a new position. sounds like she is having some issues whit her identity and needs a good old boot stomping. If you don’t like Marines maybe, just maybe you’re teaching the wrong bunch of people. The USMC doesn’t have a toxic masculinity problem. If you say that to a female marine she may knock your teeth out.

    0
  28. Lol oh you’re a soldier not a marine so stfu? How bout instead of shoving those crayons up their self adoring asses they remind him that brute force, “toxicity” as his glory-day-forgetting-ass called it, is the very thing that helps Americans sleep free at night, that “toxicity” wins wars, the same “toxicity” allows him to work a job in safety and go home to his wife and kids at night. Or grandkids. Husband… Whatever, it’s a free country, do what you want. But remember that ‘toxic masculinity’ is what affords you that right.

    0
  29. There is definitely pride in being TOXIC! A great virtue in those required to kill for a living. The street creditably which affords fear in an opponent is 90% of the battle.

  30. debating with someone who is critical of the Marine Corps is like a Christian debating with an atheist. there is little point to the attempt as a non-Marine will never be able to grasp what it means to be “a Marine” no more than a “devout atheist” will ever grasp what the love and salvation of Jesus Christ means to a Christian. one might as well attempt discussing Quantum Mechanics with a two year old. my father was “a Marine” in the Pacific in WW-II; my brother did two tours as a Marine in Vietnam; i did 22 years in the Marines finishing up with a combat tour in Ramadi, Iraq in 2005-06. what i don’t understand is WHY someone like this nut James Joyner is “taking up space” at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. the Marines have many more “pressing” and “legitimate” issues to deal with rather than wasting 1 minute debating whether “the Corps” is “just too violent.”

    0
  31. Well I did not get the memo about killing my mother and father. Besides my mom would have killed me first. Ha Ha mom, love you. So yeah, if you don’t have the title of Marine then it would be better for him to keep quiet.

“fruity and tart are good words for describing a beer but not for describing a Marine “

    0
  32. Of course the Marines are toxic, they’re fucking Marines for Christ’s sake! A military branch that is given outdated, refurbished, Army hand me down shitty equipment, constantly forced to wait around for hours for no reason, they are all treated like equal pieces of shit by their leadership, and just to help breed deep seeded hatred, anger, and willingness to kill on command. The US Marine Corps makes sure each Marine is put through specific training that is designed to cause excruciating pain, blood, sweat, tears, a lot of testosterone production, brotherhood bonding, and all this combines to create the world’s most effective, highly toxic killing machines.

    0
  33. The good professor should reexamine his intelligence to realize that “toxic” can be either bad or good, depending on the intent and purpose. There are occasions when we want, we NEED, something to be toxic. And then, there are times that we don’t want them to be, as in “professors” and “academia”. The professor needs to get his cranium out of his rectum.

    0
  34. I am pretty sure the USMC should be toxic and wanting to win battles. Marines only want the best on their team and I agree with that… Also, aren’t the Marines called “Devil Dogs” ? Marines are meant to be feared on the battle field and during combat… If others weren’t scared of the Marines then we wouldn’t have battles won..

    0
  35. I was an enlisted Marine (03) and a Gulf War veteran. Since every officer in my command received a bronze star being awarded one isn’t really that big of a deal in many cases. I think many officers get them almost as a “unit award” although it’s not one. That being said, I also have a graduate degree and I’m a firm believer that it just make you smarter than anyone else just that you were willing to put the time in and spend the money. What it comes down to to is this guy is a Marine Corps hater and needs to be dropped from teaching at staff college.

    0
  36. To hell with him and those like him, they are sniveling academic parrots; I’ve always said they are nothing but academic lab scum that know nothing about real life.

    0
  37. You should be ashamed of yourself for misrepresenting the words of a fellow veteran to further your own exploitive and exclusionary agenda. You should also put a disclaimer on your little tantrum to let readers know you’re using a quote from a person referring to the sexual exploitation of women and twisting it around in an act of deception. You’re a disgrace. Or just an idiot but you ARE a marine so…

    0
    1. Misrepresenting? In what way? He said we’re toxic because of how we reacted to the opening of combat jobs to women, Sgt. Major Lehew and many Marines conducted a test which showed that it was a poor idea. The best of the best. Shame on this veteran for speaking on a subject he knows nothing about and shame on you for trying to come to his rescue on a subject you clearly know very little about.

      0
  38. He should worry more about his soldiers in his beloved Army of one / be all you can be or is it army strong. He needd to figure that out and leave the Marine Corps to actual Marines.

    0
  39. Sounds like he might be running for President! They are all denying any truth that does not mesh with the pink pussthat criteria! Selling us out! Unfortunately, history tells us we are overdue for seeing our country and culture bite the dust! We’ve become “soft” as a culture, too over-civilized and will go down!

    0
  40. The professor’s judgment by maki g these idiotic, stupid, unfounded comments speaks volumes of his experience and quality of his educational journey…very lacking, very lacking indeed! I would suggest this professor pack up and conduct a night retrograde out of Quantico!

  41. I am a infantry marine and I fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am about to retire this year after 23 years of service and I love it every second. However, as marine we live a life between good and evil (heaven or hell)but in order to kill evil , marines have to become evil to walk in hell through the shadow of death in hell. For everyone out there listen to this, different between marines and other military branches with fight with the heart but we also belief in our Corps values ( honor, courage, and commitment/ 14 leadership traits and principle of leadership and we as marines belief on them to the death. marines are willing to die for each other but not quit or surrender. When we become evil to do bad thing to the enemy and when we finished the mission, how we get back to the middle good and evil the basic disiciple and everything else I stated above because for me that work.

  42. Dr. Joyner has an impressive education but his Combat experience, or as Marines say “Trigger Time” , is non-existant. An artillery MOS & Bronze Star can mean nothing as far as Combat experience. A lot of these guys like to say that they do/did things “just like the infantry”. The army gives out Bronze Stars like salt tablets, and frankly, not a very high decoration for an Army Officer.
His comments suggest that maybe his education credentials need researched because his comments are pretty dumb. Sounds like he is at Quantico where Marine Officer Candidates are trained and Commissioned and then trained some more. No shortage of Brass. He sounds like he’s jealouse and sorry he didn’t have the balls to try out for the First Team. He needs to STFU!!

    0
  43. They have to deal with death everyday, that’s why they have to be toxic.
    To fight death.
    To scare.
    To kill.
    To win.
