Movie Star Chris Pratt was seen wearing a Gadsen flag T-shirt in stunning (sarcasm) and shocking (sarcasm) images circulating online. Many people have decried the shirt as being a symbol for white supremacists. Many people who are dumb. Many people who don’t know fukall what they are talking about. In fact, they know about as much of the history and symbolism of this flag as we here know about proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation…actually we probably know more and that’s a sad fact.

Originating during the American revolution, the Gadsen flag was designed by Revolutionary war General Christopher Gadsden from South Carolina in 1775. It was formally adopted in 1778 and used as a motto (not moto, but it could be moto) flag by the Continental Marines. Who then carried it anywhere they saw fit to go.

This flag accompanied Marines throughout the Revolutionary War as they stomped skulls from Tun Tavern to Nassau for those opposed to the throne. If Marines were killin’, the Gadsen flag was there.

The symbolism of the Timber Rattlesnake found in the geographical location of the original thirteen colonies is important. As everyone who is not a raging lunatic with an ounce of common sense knows, the rattlesnake, has a rattle on its tail to warn off would-be predators. That’s an important little fact. The Timber Rattlesnake, much like all snakes, just wants to be left alone and not harassed. Harassment was something that asshole King George III excelled in. Therefore the rattlesnake was the perfect animal for the colonies to adopt. We warned him (rattler symbolism) then when he didn’t pay heed, we struck.

The entire idea of the Timber Rattlesnake and the words “Don’t Tread On Me” are synonymous with the idea that we didn’t want to fight, but if we kept getting trampled on underfoot, that we as a people would lash out.

The flag if ANYTHING is a symbol for the people telling any would-be oppressor, “We don’t want to fight, but if it’s a fight you want, it’s a fight you’ll get”.
