A couple of hours ago, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran claimed responsibility for firing missiles into at least two Iraqi bases.

Here’s what we know so far-

  • Possibly 20 casualties
  • Erbil was possibly hit as well
  • Alarms in Taji Air Base went off but members on the base are reporting false alarms
  • The IRGC of Iran has claimed the missile attacks
  • Videos have been pushed out of the base getting hit.

We will update as more information is confirmed and becomes available.

8:30pm CST update-

At approximately 5:30pm EST, Iran launched several surface-to-surface missiles at both Erbil and Al-Asad Air Bases in Iraq.  Updated reports are showing that 10 missiles hit inside Al-Asad and one hit inside Erbil.  Neither base is reporting casualties yet. At least 15 missiles were fired in totality, with that number continually getting updated.

There are also reports confirming that the Patriot missile batteries were able to return fire and shoot down at least three of the missiles attempting to hit the bases.  We received an anonymous video of outgoing fire from one of the bases and posted it to Facebook.

At this time, it does appear that there may be Iraqi casualties, but local assessments are still being completed.  The following Tweet was released by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif:

The Department of Defense has released the following statement, found here.

“We are working on initial battle damage assessments.

In recent days and in response to Iranian threats and actions, the Department of Defense has taken all appropriate measures to safeguard our personnel and partners. These bases have been on high alert due to indications that the Iranian regime planned to attack our forces and interests in the region.

As we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend U.S. personnel, partners, and allies in the region.

Due to the dynamic nature of the situation, we will continue to provide updates as they become available.”

At this time the FAA has also forbidden flying over Iraq, Iran and parts of the Persian Gulf as the situation continues to unfold.  Iran released statements saying this is part of a “fierce attack” in response to the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

Keep following up for more updates!
