Asshole of the week: Pandemic profiteering

Categories: Asshole of the Week, But True, News

We have all been under some pressure with the COVID-19 virus. However, there is a certain breed of profiteering scum that decided this was their opportunity to cash in. By this, I mean they have cleared out stores of basic supplies in hopes of selling them at a huge profit.

One such example is Matt Colvin. The former Air Force Technical Sergeant bought nearly 18,000 bottles of hand sanitizer. He fully admits he was going to mark up the cost in hopes of making a profit in resale. After the first coronavirus death in America, he and his brother started taking road trips to gobble up basic supplies such as sanitizing wipes, and cleaning agents.

Amazon was alerted of the price gouging and pulled their listings down. The duo had bottles of hand sanitizer going for as high as $70 a pop.

After being ripped apart on social media, Matt said he was going to donate the supplies. However, he also said he still wants to make a profit and sell them for a fair price. Colvin went on to say in an interview, that he was not sorry for buying all the products. This sounds like he’s tap dancing to avoid the petition to bring him up on charges started on Change.org

In a recent update, local authorities and the Attorney General’s office facilitated the “donation” of the supplies to a local church and first responders. Colvin was not present for what almost seemed like a confiscation.

This is just one example of many of the type of selfish actions that will cost lives in the long run. We highly discourage this type of behavior. Additionally, we implore you to contact us if you are aware of any other type of profiteering from the pandemic.

Now, your life, as difficult as it may be at this current time…doesn’t seem so bad does it? At least you’re not our Asshole of the Week (and that is something you can hang your hat on!)… Cheers!

Editor’s Note: A local reporter shows the products being donated in his Twitter feed, here.

Know what we're sayin fam?

  1. This kind of price gouging should send these assholes to prison. Look on Ebay. I saw two 8 oz bottles and some masks for $150. These are supplies the healthcare providers could use. As a retired paramedic I sort of take it personally.

  2. The law should punish him to full extent. If nothing else but to show they won’t tolerate price gouging. He is a serious asshole.

    1. Hey call the number on the back of the formula. I heard companies are giving families a good amount of formula to those who can’t find any. Best of luck

He is an embarrassment to The Air Force. Don’t lump us in with hie sorry ass!

  6. I personally don’t think he did anything wrong, however ,it isn’t something I would do. If someone is stupid enough to pay 70$ for a bottle of hand sanitizer, let them do it. Neither hand sanitizer nor TP is going to keep you alive. When it’s your time to go,it’s your time to go. I don’t use hand sanitizer and being without TP isn’t really a big deal. People are just stupid.

  8. Yall are totally cool with government confiscation and redistribution of a product this man spent his hard earned money on because why???
This is the government tyranny youre always saying “come and take it” over.
Just because this man had the foresight to take action and prepared for the oncoming demand. When he bought it all nobody wanted any, but now that there’s a mad dash on sanitizer fuck him and take his shit. Fucking commies

  10. The Air Force will deal with this disgraceful sergent. He should know better, being a sergeant in the Air Force. They do not condone such actions by their service personnel, it is unbecoming of a service person to do such a selfish thing, period. I’m sure the AF will makes sure he regets his actions. An AF. Veteran.

  12. What a dirt bag, I’m glad he wasn’t able to profit off others in this time of uncertainty in our country! We need to be willing to help each other out, and take care of people that are not able to provide these basic things for their families not rip them off!

  13. Michael, guess you won’t bitch when insider trading drains you 401k, will you. If a government official did this , and just for the record, one did just that. Do now his fellow members are looking for a way to prosecute him.
These are the kind of people that will force national rationing of products. In some countries this guy would get stood up in front of a wall. We are at with a deadly virus working against a clock to save lives. This is no for anyone to show their dark side causing others to suffer. This is a time for humanity to pull together for for the good of all.
