India-China border resolutions

For a little over a week there have been reports of conflicts and escalation of force at the India-China border. It appears the two countries are coming to a peaceful resolution. According to the Ministry of External Affairs for India, two military commanders met June 6 to “peacefully resolve the situation.”

The two countries have been reinforcing positions on their borders for weeks. At one point, there were even media reports of both sides resorting to fisticuffs. The reports also show that neither side fire shots; however, they threw rocks and even beat each other with wooden clubs.

Disputes like this are not uncommon. In 2017, the two nations fought over road construction along their borders. The Chinese stated the Indian military crossed the border, while the Indian military accused the Chinese of treading into an ally of India’s territory. The two went back and forth for two months before both sides withdrew their militaries.

China and India have had disputes between their land lines for decades, even after forming legal agreements determining the “Line of Actual Control” in the 1990s. The LAC was initially established during disputes in the 1960s. The border line is approximately 2,100 miles long.

This also comes about, of course, as the world is in a general state of unrest and China has reportedly been up to a few not-so-great things.  Yet, we digress. In reports this week, it does appear India and China will be able to once again resolve their border disputes.

“Both sides agreed to peacefully resolve the situation in the border areas in accordance with various bilateral agreements and keeping in view the agreement between the leaders that peace and tranquility in the India-China border regions is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs’ release stated.

Thankfully, this was resolved with no military actions. (Well, other than that whole ‘sticks and stones’ thing.) What do you think? Drop a comment and let us know!
