census

Why you should do the census before bed tonight

According to their website, “The deadline to respond to the 2020 Census is October 15, 2020.”

That’s today.

If you have not already done the census, this is a big deal, and here is why:

It determines your representation in DC

Members of the United States House of Representatives are determined by how many people live in an area, and then are broken up into districts. Thus, states with higher populations have more representation. Similarly, each one representing about 700,000 people. Unlike the senate, where each state gets two senators. Having a low population tally could lower the voice your region has in congress. This may not seem like a big deal now, but the next one wont be for 10 years.

It determines federal funding

The government uses this to fund things necessary in our communities. Public records show, “The results of the 2020 Census will inform decisions about allocating hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding to communities across the country—for hospitals, fire departments, school lunch programs, and other critical programs and services.”

Underrepresentation here could mean crowded schools, fewer new fire stations, and less government money overall.

census

It determines business

Businesses use these numbers to determine locations of new factories, restaurants, or facilities. Population trends and growth projections, are extremely important to companies looking to invest in communities.

The census is ending earlier than expected this year. That was decided by the Executive Branch, and upheld by the Supreme Court. However, there is still time to complete it. It only takes about 10 minutes, and our Constitution requires it. Do the American thing and participate by clicking here.
