In the wee hours of May 1st/2nd, 2011 SEAL Team 6, also known as DEVGRU landed in Pakistan and ended the 10-year hunt for the leader of Al-Qaeda. Osama Bin Laden. What started on the early September morning in 2001 was in some small part avenged. The lives lost, the war waged, all of it seemed so surreal upon hearing of the success of Operation Neptune Spear. Was it really done, was it really over? As the wars continued to rage in the streets of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, the rest of the world seemed to pay little mind to the fact that the leader of Al Qaeda was killed on a seemingly inconsequential day.None of us knew what was happening as we went about our daily lives.
In the darkness of the night, the SEAL team made their insertion and infiltrated the compound, creeping, silently (despite a helicopter crash in the backyard). As far as resistance goes, they were fortunate, Bin Laden had no idea he'd been found, and only a handful of guards/family members were at the compound. Making their way through the house and up the stairs, they advanced, finally coming to the bedroom of the terrorist leader, the most infamous man on the planet.
In those few seconds, which seemed like minutes and the minutes seemed like hours. A man that had planned the destruction of our people, our families, had his mortality tested. It was found wanting as the rounds hit him in the face. His lifeless body dropped to the floor. That was it. That was the vengeance we'd sought. The fight in Afghanistan would still rage on and despite the battles still to come, there was a sense of justice as those listening in heard the famous words spoken by the team leader, on behalf of all American's who perished on September 11th, 2001.Geronimo, Geronimo, Geronimo...Geronimo EKIA
